Here's a preview of the next municipal equation. For a lot of cities, that's the most important policy speech that a mayor will give in any given year. So what do you find when you analyze the speeches of mayors from different cities of all sizes across The US?

There's definitely some common themes and some signs of change. But whatever the content is, there's a pretty important audience and it's not just the people who live in that city. They're looking at the political leadership to see the tone of what a community values. We get together with the National League of Cities to talk about what it all means on the next Municipal Equation. It's a biweekly podcast from the North Carolina League of Municipalities. And I wanna say thanks for the feedback from our last episode on revitalizing alleyways. Apparently, it was a good time, and there's some social media feedback that I didn't get to when I put out the question on Twitter and Instagram about what your impressions are about downtown alleys. For instance, Lindsay with two y's said alleyways are not only great shortcuts for pedestrians, but they're also great areas for shade and that that space left unkempt is kind of wasted. So it's good for city planners to consider them as a resource. After I asked about the safety or danger aspect of dark seedy alleyways, she said she could be enticed anywhere where there's free candy. I joke. And then Ben McCrady said alleyways are underutilized and are, quote, fertile ground in built out environments for place making and innovative redevelopment, human scale projects, end quote. You can listen to that episode about alleyways and the added value of investing in them at soundcloud.com/municipalequation. It's where you can also find all the past episodes. Again, we're a production of the North Carolina League of Municipalities online at nclm.0rg. Look for the next episode on August 1 and then some really exciting episodes planned for the remainder of August. Get updates by following on Twitter at muni equation.
