A preview of the next municipal equation. I think too much of the way in which we kind of think technology will will save us and all of our problems really relies on a a dogma of the the culture of disruption and that technology information technology in the urban sphere is not to shortcut government or disrupt it, but rather to make the complexity of urban processes, particularly at the local government level, more legible to citizens so that they can more meaningfully participate.

We've talked about smart cities before, but more about the concept and vision for the future, the possibilities of better data collection, analysis, and response. Not as much about the impact on everyday people or what best practices might be for rolling smart city technology out. Do our smart city ambitions include the benefit of everyone? How do we really know? Some different angles on smart cities on the next Municipal Equation, a podcast about cities and towns and changing times. From the North Carolina League of Municipalities, online at nclm.org. All the past episodes are at soundcloud.com/municipalequation, or through iTunes, or however you listen to podcasts.
